Express your availability with your social battery

Turn a feeling that is hard to explain into a concrete request, without making your energy a performance target.

What this reference point can help you say

In Unmask, the social battery represents a personal feeling. “I have little energy for talking” may be easier to say than a detailed explanation. But a level alone remains ambiguous: someone may want to see you without being available for a long conversation. This guide suggests adding context and a request.

This is not a medical measurement. There is no threshold to reach or comparison to make between two people. You can use words instead of a percentage and leave the level undefined.

Build a message in three steps

  1. Describe the moment. Choose a specific situation: after a meeting, before a journey or during a visit. “Right now” is more useful than a definitive judgement such as “I am incapable of seeing people”.
  2. Name a condition. Noise, duration or the number of conversations are examples. Keep only what matches your experience. You do not need to identify a definite cause.
  3. Suggest what comes next. Asking for a written exchange, a shorter meeting or another time gives the other person something to respond to. A request remains a proposal to discuss.

If you do not know where you stand

You can say “I do not know yet; I would rather decide later”. Noticing how you feel should not become another obligation. If recording a level puts pressure on you, use just a sentence or leave this tool aside.

For someone close to you, an open question such as “Would you prefer to write or talk about it later?” helps check a preference. A low level does not automatically give anyone permission to cancel someone’s plans or decide for them.

Try and adjust

In the worksheet without an account, choose an availability level, a situation and a request. You can still edit the result. After the exchange, simply ask yourself whether the wording helped you be understood. If it was too vague, specify the duration or next step; if it shared too much personal information, shorten it.

In the app, the social battery can serve as a personal reference point. Share only the information you want to communicate. Preferences can change from one day to the next; an earlier indication is not permanent consent.
